Chinese men were equally divided between European dress & the long flowing gown of the upper class Chinese. These northern Chinese are well in advance of their southern brethren. Many [[strikethrough]]S[[/strikethrough]] Japanese were also seen at the races. The women wore the Japanese custom but the men, [[strikethrough]] often [[/strikethrough]] almost without exception wore European garb.
