25th March 1934. A glorious morning, with westerly breeze & no clouds : very mild; but a chilly S.E. wind springing up at 10 AM brought on the usual "jam" & after 3 pm. a constant drip. No sun after 10 o'clock.
Drove to Athy & down valley to Tankardstown Bridge. Stopped at sandpit at Ardrigh, but nothing seen except gorgeous show of White & purple [[underlined]] Veola oderata [[/underlined]]. Also stopped previously at willows in bloom on roadside (1) N. of Kill, Co. KD., where one [[underlined]] Bombus [[/underlined]] (probably [[underlined]] lucorum [[/underlined]] ) [[female symbol]] & hundreds of [[underlined]] Apis [[/underlined]];  & (2) S. of Kilcullen but nothing seen here at all.
Primroses in ditch nearer Kilcullen & Violets, violets all the way. All [[underlined]] V. oderata [[/underlined]]!
Below Tankardstown Bridge, west of river Co. QC. swept one [[female symbol]] [[underlined]] Aphidius [[/underlined]] in reed-bed & one [[female symbol]] Hemiteles off ivy on abutment of bridge.
Also took some beetles, [[underlined]] Trichoniscus vividus [[/underlined]] (v. common) & snail [[underlined]] Zonitoides nitidus [[/underlined]] more common there than ever seen it. [[underlined]] Bombus lucorum [[/underlined]] [[female symbol]] seen on willows & others heard.
[[left margin note]] [[underlined]] No [[/underlined]] Chiff-chaffs heard! Some willows well out! [[/left margin note]]
Later drove on to Castledermot, via Maganey, & back via Kilkea deerpark, Co. KD. where stopped for half an hour & beat Spruce & Silver Fir. One small [[female symbol]] [[underlined]] Pimpla macalator [[/underlined]] beaten out of latter (not kept). Then home via Athy & Kilcullen.

28th March 1934. The third sunny day in succession, but strong bitter E. wind.
Garden at Harold's Cross, DU. 2 pm.
Saw two Small Tortoiseshell butterflies flirting!

Glenasmole, Co. DU 2.30 4.30 PM. 
"Coombes" on E. side of lower reservoir!
[[underlined]] Bombus lucorum [[/underlined]] (several), [[underlined]] terrestris [[/underlined]] (1), [[underlined]] jonellus [[/underlined]] (1), [[2 female symbols]]. 
[[underlined]] Andrena clarkella [[/underlined]] [[2 male symbols]] & [[2 female symbols]] (one of later laden with pollen!)
[[underlined]] A. apicata [[/underlined]] [[2 male symbols]] abundant, 1 absolutely fresh [[female symbol]] taken.
[ [[underlined]] A. praecox [[/underlined]]? some small [[2 male symbols]] seen may have been this species]
[[underlined]] Nomada leucophthalma [[/underlined]] 1 [[female symbol]] taken.

No small hymenoptera now at all!

30th March 1934 (Good Friday). Very cold E. wind, entirely dull, & dripping at Woodenbridge in afternoon.
Drove to Gold Mines Valley, Co. WI. to look for [[underlined]] Dolerus nitens [[/underlined]] but quite hopelessly cold.
[[underlined]] Pimpla elegans [[/underlined]] 1 [[female symbol]] & [[underlined]] Bracon [[/underlined]] - 1 [[female symbol]] beaten out of same holly bush.
Cynipids common & beaten out of holly & swept in woods & marsh 2 spp. brought home.
