Dear Stelfox,

A week ago last Saturday I had practically finished your sawflies, that is so far as I could identify them, & expected to return your box last Monday, but since Sunday I was very unwell & quite "hors de combat!"

^[[This last]] Saturday J.F.P. & his friend 'Jane' Brown came down for the week end & go back tomorrow (Tuesday), he to the B.M., & she to Slough.

There is still one sawfly to determine in your box of those I can do.

Your [[underlined]] Pterandec [[/underlined]] on sallow [[male symbol]] & [[female symbol]] wh. Benson thought to be new I have not spent much time over, as he [[underlined]] ought [[/underlined]] to know these things much better than I do. It seems to be close to [[underlined]] Pt. polyspila [[/underlined]] & [[underlined]] [[cafreae?]] [[/underlined]] in Enslin. He says [[underlined]] polyspila [[/underlined]] feeds on [[strikethrough]] alder [[/strikethrough]] sallow as well as alder, but I am vy sceptical.
I never bred any from sallow in that intensive breeding work we did for several years, but I bred & took it on alder only.

Might your insect be his '[[underlined]] polyspila [[/underlined]]' from sallow??

Most of those dubious white-spotted with simple or smaller toothed claw I cannot do anything with. I left such things in my possession as doubtful forms of [[underlined]] [[litenate?]] [[/underlined]], this species apparently being

Transcription Notes:
First pass. Lots [[?]] that I can't work out. Any help gratefully received! -@siobhanleachman I think the [[uk?]]. is probably wh. for which. I read Benson and Enslin as the names, based on references to the Checklist of British and Irish Hymenoptera: https://bdj.pensoft.net/article/1168/ which refers to both Benson and Enslin. I also read "ought" for [[right?]] and the passage makes sense. I made other changes regarding their breeding of sawflies on various plants.--thomasc
