152.) 13.3.35 cont. Glenasmole, DU. cont. Primrose well out in coombes E. of lower reservoir. Some willows out below Bohernabreena chapel & in [underlined]] Dolerus dubius [[/underlined]] swamp, but only odd flowers out in the coombes. [[horizontal line]] [[line across page]] R.C. Faris, Cornafean, Co. Cavan, reports seeing on 12th March 1935 [[underlined]] Bombus lucorum [[/underlined]] [[female symbol]], [[underlined]] B. hortorum [[/underlined]] [[female symbol]] in trumpet of Daffodil, [underlined]] Andrena gwynana [[/underlined]] [[male symbol]], [[underlined]] A. clarkella [[/underlined]] [[female symbol]] sunning on bramble, Tortoiseshell & Peacock Butterflies. And on 13th March [[underlined]] A. clarkella [[/underlined]] [[2 male symbols]] & [[2 female symbols]] where none seen on 12th. Another [[underlined]] A gwynana [[/underlined]] & one [[underlined]] Bombus [[/underlined]] (? [[underlined]] lucorum [[/underlined]]). [[line across page]] 14th March 1935. Dull & mild, depression approaching. Spent morning feeding snails in motor-house for first time this year. While so doing a queen [[underlined]] Vespa vulgaris [[/underlined]] flew on to the window & wanted out, so put her out & she flew away strongly. [[end page]] [[start page]] 153. 20th March 1935. A perfect day, almost all sunny & westerly wind. Rode in afternoon to Glenasmole, Co. DU., & worked the coombs east of the lower reservoir as on 13th. A little windy in spots where draughts occurred, but sun very hot. Willows more out, but many backward. The most exciting feature of the aft. was a [[female symbol]] [[underlined]] Brimstone Butterfly [[/underlined]] ([[underlined]] G. rhamni [[/underlined]]) which I saw first a hundred yards away. I scrambled up the coomb to intercept it as it flew south, but in such a place it quite easily evaded me though I twice got within a few feet of it. It appeared to be very large & absolutely fresh. Also saw Peacock & Totoiseshell Butterflies. [[underlined]] Bombus lucorum [[/underlined]] [[2 female symbols]] about a dozen seen at willows, &c. [[underlined]] Andrena clarkella [[/underlined]] [[2 male symbols]] abundant, also [[2 female symbols]], some working. [[underlined]] A. apicata [[/underlined]] [[2 male symbols]] abundant & 3 very fresh [[2 female symbols]] taken. [[underlined]] A. gwynana [[/underlined]] [[2 male symbols]], & 1 very fresh [[female symbol]] seen. [[underlined]] Nomada leucophthalma [[/underlined]] 2 (1 [[male symbol]], 1 [[female symbol]]) Ich. The usual [[underlined]] Diaparius [[/underlined]] (? Thersilockus) in dozens at one big willow just coming into flower. Tiger Beetles seen. Many birds singing but no chiff-chaffs. [[left margin note]] All bees but 1 [[male symbol]] [[underlined]] gwynana [[/underlined]] sent to Zimmermann of Berlin! [[/left margin note]]
Transcription Notes:
Edited mark up in line with instructions and previous Stelfox projects for consistency. Smithsonian Archives has asked us not to use ? as these symbols don't transfer across systems with the file. Checked species names & localities. Can't confirm [[Dolinus?]] dubius on first page. -@siobhanleachman
I added the left margin note on page 2.--thomasc
"birds" on last page was missing a "b" so I've added it in. -@siobhanleachman
I think the locality on the left page may refer to a "Dolerus dubius swamp" - perhaps a swampy place he collected Dolerus dubius before. -@mnathan
