1936.

January & February were cold, stormy & wet, with two heavy falls of snow.
Everything very late. Sundrops not out till 8th February in front garden; Coltsfoot seen on sunny bank beyond Templeogue Bridge, where one turns off to Willington House; Crocuses not out till 22nd Feb. Except a few odd days there was no sign of weather taking up till end of 1st week of March & [[underlined]] Saxifraga oppositifolia [[/underlined]], [[underlined]] S. apiculata [[/underlined]] & [[underlined]] Chionodoxa [[/underlined]] came out slowly, during the following week. [[insertion, written sideways in margin]] On 10th March no hymenoptera seen in the Furry Glen, DU. & the only insect taken was a Hemerobiid. A.W.S. [[/insertion]]
After a dull grey & cold week, Sunday 15th March was a flowingly sunny day with gentle westerly breeze - the first sign of spring & the first feeling of geniality in the air - so Palmer, Allen, George & I all went to Glenasmole, Co. DU. & worked the coombes on east side of lower reservoir, as usual, & found a few bees out; but willows & all plants very backward & only one or two [[male symbol]] flowers on one willow in the 3rd coombe.
