8th May 1938. A fine, cold day, with NE-E breeze: sunny in morning & after 3.30 P.M. but quite dull from noon till 3.30. Everything very dry & insects scarce. Whitethroat singing at Bohernabreena, but no Swifts seen this day & none seen by me since 1st May. Cuckoo heard in afternoon.

Glenasmole, Co. DU. Noon till 4.30 PM

Worked across lower dam & along E. side of lower reservoir above the coombs to upper dam (= 1); then swept the flat near Moore's garden & round about (= 2).

Too cold & draughty to collect along W. side of lower reservoir.

Bees very abundant after sun came out, especially on a chestnut tree near the "ford" at Moore's garden, where all sorts of Andrena & Nemada [[male symbol, male symbol]] were sunning themselves at 4 PM. Saw nothing special in Aculeate line. Willow sawflies just coming out & a few swept, but sun hidden when I was in "willow glade", except for one blink, during which I caught a [[male symbol]] Pteronidea with orange head &c.
