Roses. On 1st May Daisy pointed out a single flower on a rose (R. tomentosa group) at Bohernabreena near Mrs. Doyle's, but this looked merely an early freak or a "left over" from last autumn. On 8th, however, the R. Spinosissima was in full flower at same place. The "R. tomentosa" (sp.?) in my garden, Harolds Cross came into flower on 18th, which is at least a fortnight early, if not more.

19th-20th May 1938. After a few cold sunny days with E. wind, weather turned very soft & warm, with some misty rain on 20th.

The first Crabro (C. varius) [[male symbol]] seen on evening of 19th at my clothes-line post in garden, Harold's Cross, on which night Charles Oldham & his wife stayed with me on their way to The Mullet. At 5.30 on 20th, very many [[male symbol, male symbol]] of C. varius & several of C. Leucostomus (Auct.) were flying about the post.

22nd May 1938. An almost perfect day! Warm, with much sun: N. breeze in morning turning to S.W. in afternoon with more cloud, but no rain: cooler towards evening & fewer insects out.
