A poor day, very windy (SW) with intermittant drizzle & heavy rain in evening. After tea drove to Poulaphuca, Co. Left home at 6.20 & arrived Poulaphuca at 7.5; as it had cleared down on to Hollywood Glen, Co. WI., but just after we arrived there heavy rain set in. Collected, in two sweeps under hazel bushes the following:-

21st Aug. 1938.

A poor day except for storm in afternoon, SW wind, much sun & insects plentiful, especially mosquitoes, which occurred in dozens & were as hungry as wolves & prevented all attemps to collect seriously in the marshes.

Down to Killoughter, on The Murrough, Co. WI. There around 11:30 AM & left at 5 P.M., though hearing storm at 2:30 ended serious collecting.

Driven out of the marshes by the road, tried North along railing for a mile, making raids into the marsh here & there, but most insects taken along railing or in fields between same & marsh. After shower at 2:30 walked to upper end of the Broad Lough, which flows out to Wicklow town & is brackish & coll. with sucker amongst drift containing some decaying sea-weed (Fucus) & reeds: the insects taken here listed separately at the end.

Saw one solitary Swift repeatedly basking on marsh with dozens of Swallows, House Martins & Sand Martins.
