[[marginalia]] Five Ravens circling over valley at 3.30 & calling vigorously as they circled & drifted westward. [[\marginalia]]

8th Sept. 1938.

A most perfect autumn day, blue sky & all sunny till late evening, with rising barometer & strong N. breeze, drizzling at 6 P.M. In afternoon drove to Athdown (Kippure Lodge), by the hill road, walked down to R. Liffey & collected in quagmire at foot of meadow & under trees on bluff under main road for an hour; then swept under trees along tributary stream back to bridge (i.e. the reverse of usual procedure) for another hour. Watched oaks, &c. in very hot sun for Crabros, but only saw C. varius & mellinus arvensis. At bored standing tree (12 feet!) saw C. varius, C. chrysostomus & Pemphredon lugabris, the last carrying home flies, apparently, in its mouth, as a dog would do.

Insects plentiful under trees!

Saw one Clegg at 5.0 P.M.

Later drove on to Poulaphuca & picked up George & went on to glen at Ardinode, 2 miles S.E. of Ballymore Eustace, C. Kildare
