27th August 1939.

Very hot & damp, with variable winds & "jams": no rain, but vegetation very wet in shelter, due to some previous rain that we did not have in Dublin.

Drove to Glenealy (W1), then on via Drumdangan & Tullylusk to Connary, where parked car & went down into wood below road. Sweeping in most places impossible, but most insects taken by this method in marshy spots in glades or under dense scrub.

Vale of the Avonmore, above Connary, N. of Meeting of the Waters, Co. WI. 12 noon till 4 P.M.

Bombus agrorum, lucorum & hortorum seen.
B. lapidarius 1 faded [[male symbol]] seen.
Vespa vulgaris 1 [[juvenile symbol]] seen sucking Dipteron on underside of sloping tree trunk, holding fly in front 4 legs, clinging to bark with 2 hind claws with dorsum of abdomen against tree & appeared quite secure & comfy in this position.
