24th Sept. 1939. 

A most perfect day, though wind E & and fairly strong in Dublin;  mainly sunny after mid-day.

Drove to Kippure House gate, Athdown, Co. WI, & swept birch scrub below main road & between main road & military road to Kilbride:  most insects taken at latter place.  Insects very plentiful, but Stenomacrus ventralis too common & a nuisance, both sexes.  Met present owner of land, Mr. Owen Keogh, & made friends!  
[25 from 1, 67 from 2 & 8 from either 1 or 2 mtd & these labelled 2-6/4/1942! AWS.]

Birch scrub, Kippure Ho. Athdown, Co. WI.
12.30 till 1.30, between road + R Liffey = 1
2.30 till 4.30, edge of main road & sawdust heap on S. of road & chiefly between main & upper road.

Bombus agrorum  one seen running! ? a [[male symbol]]. 
Vespa vulgaris  [[juvenile symbol, juvenile symbol]]
Myrmica ruginodis (& no doubt M. scabrinodis) very active
Formica fusca [[juvenile symbol, juvenile symbol]] also very active
Leptothorax acervorm  [[juvenile symbol, juvenile symbol]] swept, frequent.

Phyganeuonid  [[male symbol]] at 2, red. ant. 26-seg.
Cratocryptus??  [[male symbol]] at 2, white-marked face & coxae, ant. 26-seg.
Hemiteles  [[female symbol]] at 1, small [[female symbol]] brown abd., 20-seg. ant.
Hemiteles?  black [[female symbol]], apex of abd. very polished, ant. 22-seg.

P. brevicornis?  2 [[male symbol, male symbol]], like last, but stigma unicolorous & not pale in centre.

Lissonota commixta?  [[male symbol, male symbol]] abundant at 1, near hedge. - 2 [[male symbol, male symbol]] kept, one with black face & mesonotum, the other with yellow marks on both.
Dyspetes praerogator  [[male symbol]] with last

Promethes sulcator  [[male symbol, male symbol]] at 2.
Homocidus sundevalli  1 fine [[female symbol]] swept off birch at 2.
H. flavoguttatus?  1 [[female symbol]] at 1, var. with black coxae.  (? this or biguttatus with pale shoulder marks)
Mesoleius  [[female symbol]] at 1.

Exenterus sp. not kept.
Diaborus  [[female symbol]] at 2.
