18th Aug. 1940.

A hot, moist, day; falling glass, with SW-NW jam & rain blowing in the wind but not wetting the vegetation in shelter, occasionally amounting to a misty shower - occasionally clearing with intense hot sun & steam.

Spent day between Ashford & Rathdrum, but too hot & damp for serious collecting: blackberries ripe. Collected for nearly an hour in oak wood at Ahowle (S.W. of Ashford & Devil's Glen) = 1; & under lee of beech shelter-belt just E. of Cronyburn main entrance = 3; then back to Garryduff X roads & past "Stump of the Castle" where swept a little along roadside & in scrub, had tea & home via Rathdrum = 2.

[12 insects from 1 mounted, 7 from 2 & 19 from 3 & these labelled 25 (et seq.) 4.1943. AWS.]
