189. 1st Sept. 1940. A very fine day after an early morning jam with much thick rain - mist in Dublin - practically none however south of Naas. Drove to Ballinclea Bridge over R. Slaney, in Glen of Imaal (via Naas & Dunlavin) where met Mr. Fenton owner of Ballinclea House & was shown site where about 20-25 years ago he got a perfect skeleton of an Irish Elk & another head, the latter much decayed through drainage, about 1/4 mile SW of Ballinclea Bridge. The drain is a double ditch with old fir trees planted on the bank between the drains. 190 1.9.40, cont. Ballinclea, Co. WI., cont. After lunch, 2 till 3 P.M., collected by sweeping just above B. Bridge on right bank of Slaney, in an Iris-filled marsh & in a shelter belt near same = 1; later, after tea, swept several places further upstream on right bank, mainly along river or under beech & elm trees at foot of big hay field, then locality almost exactly under station No. 1 of 21st July 1940 & subsequent dates. = 2 [29 mounted from 1 & 39 from 2 & then labelled 2.5.43 et seq. AWS.] Ballinclea, Glen of Imaal, Co. WI. ca. 600 ft. alt. Bombus lucorum 1 fresh ♀ seen searching B. agrorum ☿☿, faded, still frequent. Crabro vagus at lored log by Slaney at E Pemphredon shuckardi (? 2nd hood) at same log. Athalia sp. very common on alder, at 1. Gratocryphis ? larger ♀ at 1, ant. 24 = Gratocryphis ? smaller ♀ at 2, ant. 23 = Erolytus ? very small ♂ at 2, ant. 22 =
