22nd June 1941.

A fine day, very hot sun during middle of same, dull but hot during the rest, with fresh SW-W breeze. Before starting in morning heard on wireless that Germany had attacked Russia! Rode on cycles to Athdown, Upper Liffey Valley, arriving at 12.30 noon, after lunch collected from from 1 till 4 P.M then after "tea" came back to wood on W. slope of Dowry between Kilbride & Tinnode & swept in [[image]] between roods 20 minutes, but too dry and little out here. All Co. WI.

At Athdown swept a little going down to site of footstick & on both sides of river above fall, then up along S. side (left bank) along scarp to head of gorge (= 1): on very back swept more or less same ground but chiefly at fall (left bank) then on right bank under scrub near river & down to oak-wood below fort (= 2).
