Sawfly larvae. 

[[strikethrough]] Pteronidea (?) [[/strikethrough]] Hemichroa crocea larvae in great abundance (dozens of families) on hazel:  same as taken, rarely in other places but never bred in earlier years.  1♀︎ em. 12.6.1942!  9 small ♀︎♀︎ on or about 28.7.1942.  [No ♂︎♂︎!]  From these Hemichroa larvae came 3 Diaborus on 4 July, 13 July & 6 Aug. 1942!  A.W.S.
[[marginalia]] From the pots containing the larvae of Hem. crocea emerged the following August (1942) 2♂︎♂︎, 3♀︎♀︎ of Mesoleius = cf. M. frigidus Holmgr.  In one of those pots on 21.8.42 a ♂︎ Adelura apii Curtis also found, though what it was doing there I cannot say!  A.W.S. [[/marginalia]]

Pteronidea (?) 3 large spotted larvae on birch (last of family?)
From one of these larvae a ♀︎ Polyblastus carbonarius emerged 19.5.1942 & was carrying 3 larvae when first seen!

Cimbex √  One huge - spun up in cocoon 1.10.1941 from which a ♀︎ C. femorata em. on 21st May 1943! A.W.S.;  another smaller larvae on birch, with dark line down back.  
[[marginalia]] Sleeved on birch in garden, alone, until 26.5.43 when killed. AWS. [[/marginalia]]

Trichiosoma (?) one large all green larvae on birch.
Both had spun up by 19th Oct. 41, so branch cut off tree & with sleeve put under bench in motor house.
(These last 3 larvae brought home & sleeved out on birch in garden!)

The other larvae on birch & some of those on Salix & Hazel also brought home.

Also brought & gave to MSD Westropp the following larvae off birch:-
Notodonta camelina  2 larvae
N. dictacoides  5 or 6 larvae
N. ziczac  1 on birch, though usually on Salix!
N. dromedarius
All 4 species occurred on 1 birch tree with the large Cimbex.

24th Sept. 1941.

The third very hot & fine day, nearly all sunny in afternoon with Southerly breeze at Clondalkin but Easterly in Dublin - a very soft day, with barometer down each day since 21st but no rain.

In afternoon rode to Clondalkin & spent a couple of hours collecting along side of canal about 3/4 mile above Clondalkin bridge & 1/2 mile above locks, just above entrance to farm on S. of canal, as before.  Most insects swept along parallel drain in shelter of hedge & all W. of gate to farm.

Cryptinae:  about half a dozen only taken, including Atractodes tenebricosus;  Phygadeuon small black ♀︎, superficially very like Dicaelotus pumilus but exserted terebra.
Hemiteles  ♀︎, ant. 22.
Microcryptus?  ♀︎ ant. 25.
Mesoleius  ♂︎, smaller, ant. 32.
M.  ♂︎, larger, ant. 36.
Promethes cognatus  1♀︎:  the only Bassid seen!
Cteniscus aurifluus  4, both ♂︎ & ♀︎.
Polyblastus red sp., black hind femora, 1♂︎:  not kept.
