25th-26th Feb. 1942.
Both most perfect days, all sunny & no wind, after frosty nights. On 25th the snow which fell on 23rd having mostly melted & there being very hot sun, the first buds of Binevenagh Sax. oppositifolia in front garden opened & on 26th the first flowers appeared on the Snowdon plant on E. side of back garden.

On 25th we went by 2.10 bus to Bohernabreena & walked up road from R.C. Chapel to Glenasmole school on E. side of valley & home through water-works. Except on south-facing banks the snow still lay 2 to 3 inches thick & the lower reservoir quite frozen over. Between 4 & 4.30 P.M. we lay or sat on the stone facing of the upper dam & admired the view in perfect comfort being in full sun & there being no wind. Except in the N.E. corner, where we sat, there was no ice on the upper reservoir.

28th Feb. 1942.
A white crocus flower appeared amongst the yellow by path to front gate & by 7th March there were three of them, though we don't remember a white one here before!

3rd-4th March.
Very mild with very hot sun both days, but on afternoon of 4th a depression approaching; with heavy rain at night.

5th-6th March.
Pickles of snow fell all day on 5th & it was very cold, with E.-SE. wind. By daylight there was some snow lying & by midday several inches even in town

then set in an amazing thaw & by sunset the roads were clear of snow & everything dripping, when about 7 PM a sudden hard frost set in & lasted all night - a very hard frost indeed - but hot sun on 7th removed remains of snow on low ground & very heavy rain that night removed it from all but the higher hills.

4th March 1942.
Saw Coltsfoot & Frogspawn at Glenasmole, between Mrs. Doyle's & lower dam.

8th March 1942.
One flower on Almond tree in Highfield Rd., Rathgar & one flower open on plant of Sax. apiculata west of house in front garden

10th March 1942.
Dry, with damp cold E. wind & foggy, yet in spite of this saw an active slug ([[Agrio-agristes?]]. var. lilacina) & a 1/2-grown Noctuid caterpillar under Helianthemum chamycistus plant in front garden. Also a Helix nemoralis in back garden.

11th March 1942.
Purple Crocus by path to front gate up & in flower after a wet night, [[strikethrough]] although no sign of it certainly on 8th & not seen on 9th or 10th either, but perhaps overlooked. [[/strikethrough]] Yes! seen by Daisy on 8th. Still raw & damp & E. wind.

12th.
Saw lambs for the first time near Willington House

14th.
A few flowers on Almond tree at N. end of University College, Earlsport Terrac; none yet open on tree in Kenilworth Square
