MAYO TRIP 1942.

20th May 1942.

Left Dublin in drizzle by 10 AM. train ex Westland Row & arrived Westport at 6.15 P.M., unexpectedly early, as on several days previously trains did not arrive till about 8 & on one day not till 3.30 AM next day.

Except when passing through Co. Roscommon, when there was much sun & blue sky, we passed from one local jam to another, with heavy drizzles, caused by E. wind meeting variously directed westerly breezes. Heavy shower just after arrival at Westport & another after arrival at Old Head where we stayed as in Sept. 1941. Alec Wallace drove us out & took Daisy's bike; my bike was ridden out by John Wearing of Dublin, who with his friend "Dicky" Pilkington had been staying at Old Head for a week watching birds, of which they had seen 79(?) in vicinity of Old Head. They returned to Dublin the following morning.

On journey from Dublin saw Bombus agrorum and lucorum at Athlone, Co. WH, where train stopped before crossing R. Shannon and Bombus lapidarius at Knockcrockery, Co. Roscommon.

Dabeocia already in flower on W. side of the "Little Hill" at Old Head.
