22nd May 1942.

A very fine day with strong SW breeze & much sun, showers about in afternoon but none passed over Old Head. In forenoon spent an hour sweeping birch near "Boat House" (the ruined house near the Quay at Old Head) & along coast N. of quay. In afternoon we rode to dunes at Carrowmore, west of the Bunowen at Louisburgh, where found snail Helicella caperata (= intersecta) on one patch of old dunes just W. of river mouth.

Too windy on these dunes for insects & sand too loose to be much good for anything, but lots of Lotus corniculatus on exposed flats & many, many, Honey Bees at its flowers. Also some Sea Holly. After tea in shelter of old dune, we walked west, past huge section of Boulder Clay & small pier, for about a mile, along top of cliffs, where saw several Green Hairstreaks about willow scrub (S. aurita & S. repens). Also a good deal of Bog Myrtle & one lovely patch of Saxifraga umbrosa on a big rock, 30 yards above path along cliffs. No sign of Dabeocia or any of the Corraun Achill plants (Arctostaphylos, Empetrium & Juniper!)
