30th May 1942.

A very fine day with only two skiffs of rain, but much hot sun: NW breeze (cool).

In forenoon did not go out, but set insects &c.; between lunch & afternoon tea swept along stream in woods, in glade N. of stream, top of meadow opposite hotel & around lazy-beds at top of second field (= 1); very little out & few Braconids; after aft. tea & before dinner worked birch & willow scrub west of hotel at foot of S. side of Black Hill (= 2) & later birch & willow bushes on exposed N. slope of Black Hill (= 3) where to my surprise were more hymenoptera than any other place on this day. At 5 P.M. news of floating mines coming into Clew Bay caused local excitement & between 9 P.M. & 12.30 AM. six went off at some distance from Old Head, but the last two shook the hotel considerably & were believed to be the two seen off shore at Carrowmore, just W. of Louisburgh during the evening. All these mines were exploded by the military after coming on shore.

During day ☿☿ of Bombus jonellus came frequently to Rhododendron flowers in sitting room & also several B. lucorum ♀︎♀︎. B. lucorum & B. agrorum ♀︎ frequent on flowers of Lousewort (Pedicularis) & 1♀︎ Psithyrus barbutellus examined & released
