31st May 1942.

A very fine day, nearly all sunny till 6 P.M., then dull, with N. breeze. Sunday.

Spent 1/2 hour before dinner in woods & on coast E. side of The Little Hill, N. of quay (= 1); between dinner & aft.-tea swept birch, willow, & vegetation in swamps in woods at foot of S. side of Black Hill (= 2); & between 6 & 7 p.m. swept swamps along stream in woods between Black & Little Hills, along track of old road, where took a ♂︎ Dacnusa the previous day, which may be a new species (= 3).

After sweep at 2, went up south slope on to top of Black Hill to join Daisy who was just up in time to see mine explode on Roonah Strand (a few miles to SW.); saw several Salius, many Dingy Skippers, & 2 Bee Hawk-Moths on way up Black Hill & one of last on way down N. slope. Mine explosions occurred at intervals all day along coast & later heard that windows were blown in at Miss Blackham's hotel (Amythest House) on Achill Island.
