6.6.44, Aft. cont. Ballinacourty, ST. cont.

Swept birch, oak, Vaccinium, &c. on way up to top of woods = "(4) 6.6.44".

Swept a few coming down again but only 5 or 6 & these not separated from insects swept around pond 1/4 mile E. of ruins of Ballinacourty H. which are labelled "(5) 6.6.44".

Formica rufa very lethargic owing to cold, but Daisy found what appeared to be remains of a nest under dense growth of Vaccinium & dead branches (due to larger trees having been cut (? about a year ago) & these branches flung abut in the approved style - the light thus admitted being responsible for the growth of the under-scrub. The nest is situated about 5 yards down hill from the old Holly tree where the ants seen in ditch on 28.5.44 & the position of which is described on pp.145-147 ante. NB. This holly seems to be the only holly at present anywhere about this spot. Three large ☿☿ taken.
