7.6.44 cont. Glancushnabinnia & L. Borheen, ST.

In crossing col to next valley E of Glancushnabinnia noted a little Empetrum nigrum in one spot ([[strikethrough]] between 1500 ft. & [[/strikethrough]] over 1600 ft.) where turf-cutting had not spoiled the original surface.

Had lunch beside huge erratic at about 1450 ft. alt. 1/2 mile below L. Borheen & after lunch spent an hour examining large rushy marsh (ref. to on p.179 ante) & sweeping for insects. Here just at "outlet" of marsh discovered one small patch (about a yard square) of Ranunculus Lenormandi in full flower (flowers nearly 1/4 inch across) but much injured by tramping of sheep, as are all other plants in this & other places. Other plants seen here include Comarum palustre, Menyanthes trifoliata (very stunted & leaves only, growing between clumps of Juncus effusus & suggesting a former tarn with open water!), Veronica scutellata, Drosera rotundifolia (very sparingly), Myosotis repens, Carex diocia, C. goodenowii & C. stellulata (& I think C. oederi)

7.6.44, cont. Lough Borheen, ST.

At 3 P.M. continued up E. side of valley to some low cliffs at ca. 1600 ft., where Sax. "hirta" & S. stellaris, Hieracium sp., Primrose, Empetrum (on cliffs), Lycopodium Selago.

Swept N. & W. shore of L. Borheen for insects & also searched for & found a few Pisidia nitidum Jen.: a rotund very thick form, near v. crassa!!! A.W.S. 6.1.1945., at W. end of lake, where are two patches of Potamogeton natans, Littorella lacustris & Callitriche sp. recorded by Hart as C. platycarpa Scop.)

Many baby fish seen in shallow edges of tarn & trout jumping all over. Many insects floating on surface including several spp. of Pterosticus like beetles (2 spp. at least collected): one of the smaller species seen to swim to & pull out on stone about a yard from shore, cross stone, investigate & take bearings & set out & swim to next stone & so to shore, where captured. One similar beetle dead & floating on surface & larger species picked out nearly dead - kicking upside down under surface film of water.

A ♀︎ Stenomacrus cf. cubiceps picked out of water & put into sucker. No water-beetles seen.
