11th July 1944.

The best day for some time, cool, with strong NW wind, but no rain.  Rising glass.

On this day at 4 P.M. a fresh ♀︎ Bombus lucorum came through the N. window of my room in Museum, i.e. within one day of first appearance (10th!) in 1942, but nearly 3 weeks later (21st June!) than in 1943.


12th July 1944.

A very warm damp day, spoiled by the passing of a small secondary depression about midday with strong hot wind & thick drizzle, after a dull but fine night & morning;  evening again fine & sunny, as wind went round from SE-S to W.  Collecting in open impossible owing to wet grass for the greater part of the day.

Left home on bikes at 10 AM. in drizzle & rode to Louisa Bridge, Leixlip, on Royal Canal, reached plantation 1/2 mile west of Louisa Bridge about 11.30 & just as thick drizzle swept across country from S-SW;  nevertheless swept along tow path & for about 200 yards W. of plantation till lunch time;  after lunch collected in plantation (where very windy) till heavy misty rain made further collecting impossible.  After this had cleared off tried collecting in shelter of

hedge on W. side of field between canal & Maynooth road;  then rode back to Rye Water where had aft. tea & tried sweeping marsh, &c., between road & Rye Water & N. of canal.  Left there about 5.30 & home at 6.55.

1 - Edge of tow path, W. of plantation, 1/2 mile W. of Louisa Bridge.  11.30 - 12.30.
2 = Inside walled plantation:  western 2/3.  1.30 till 3.0 }
3 = East end only of plantation, where poplar suckers are.  1.30 till 3.0 }
4 = W. side of 3rd field between canal & road, 1/4 mile W. of Louisa Bridge.  3.30 - 4.0
5 = Slope from Louisa Bridge to Rye Water, N. of canal.  4.30 - 5.30.

General notes.

Vespa vulgaris & rufa ☿☿ seen.
Bombus sylvarum ♀︎ seen at 5 on flowers of Ononis:  the first time I have seen sylvarum at this spot & usually it is 1/4 mile further west.

Bethylus cephalotes.  Several large ♀︎♀︎ swept at 1 on edge of canal.
Tenthredo "arcuata" common.
