29th August 1944.
Caught one of the wasps from the nest in front garden & found it was V. germanica as I had suspected: this now a very strong colony, in spite of some heavy rain and seasonal wet days recently.

30th Aug. 1944.
In spite of falling glass & heavy rain at 7 AM took day off & rode to Athdown, where joined by Desmond Meikle, who walked from & back to bus at The Lamb. I left home at 9.30 & arrived at Athdown at 11.50 after a fairly heavy push against wind. Sunny all the way & nearly all sunny till 3 P.M. when a slight shower & another at 4.30. Left Athdown at 5.50 & home at about 7.30, with wind behind me.
