Aspilota cf. cynipidis?  1♀︎, ant. 20;  but ant. slender & propodeum rather too smooth & areolated!
Dacnusa areolaris group  1♀︎:  not mtd.
Gyrocampa uliginosa  1♂︎ on edge of pond S. of sandpit;  ant. 25.

Saw a Red Admiral in Stephens Green on way to Museum at 1.45 P.M.


3rd Oct. 1944.

Cold strong N. wind with much hot sun.  At 1.30 P.M. many male Vespa germanica in front garden, presumably

from the next in front garden, now a very strong colony in spite of bad rain & cold weather.  On 4th Oct. the workers were flying on a cold sunless morning at 8.30 A.M. & still flying busily at 7 P.M. or nearly dusk.


4th Oct. 1944.

Cold with strong N & NW wind but afternoon near all sunny, so rode to Glenasmole & collected some blackberries & elder berries just below lodge at lower dam & on W. side of valley.  Also tried sweeping but this only produced one ♀︎ Dacnusa areolaris (?).  Next tried looking for insects in shelter along tall hedge & took about a dozen with sucker as follows:-

Stenomacrus ventralis  ♂︎:  not kept.
Dacnusa lateralis  1 perfect ♀︎, ant. 39.
D. stramineipes  ♂︎, ant. 26.
D. laevipectus √  3♀︎♀︎.  2 mounted ant. 22 & 23, radius of latter very long & stigma narrow.
D. areolaris??  1♀︎, not kept.
D. longiradialis  1♀︎ small, ant. 20.
1 of each Dacnusa mounted except the supposed D. areolaris.
