Xmas Day 1944, cont.

round the north side, out by White Gate to Castleknock, Knockmaroon Gate, to Chapelizod & home by Killeen, the Fox & Geese, Greenhills & Kimmage Rd., but saw nothing to report.

On afternoon of 26th rode via Greenhills & Whitehall House, round old Tallagh aerodrome & home via Jobstown, Tallagh & Templeogue. On ivy blossom in hedge near Whitehall gate saw quite a number of males of Vespa vulgaris (one of which taken for record!) & at another place up the hill saw one worker. This is my latest record for either male or workers though R.M. Barrington recorded wasps at Fassaroe, near Bray, in January. After such a wet & cool autumn it is amazing that any could survive, but this may be due to abundance of late ivy blossom, though this started to flower very early as usual side branches are still producing an abundance of fresh flowers.

58/

1944.

28th & 29th Dec. Clear days with much rain & frost at night.

30th Dec. Milder after some rain at night.

31st. Dec. Mild, damp, but no rain, dull in morning, brighter & quite pleasant in afternoon but no sun. In afternoon took bus to Rathfarnham & walked home via The Narrow Walls, Churchtown, Milltown Golf Links & Orwell Bridge. Much ivy still in blossom but saw no wasps. Lesser Calandine by ditch just behind Rathfarnham Castle, almost out - one good fat bud nearly open - & some plants as weeds in a garden in Churchtown with buds & one flower actually open, male catkins on Hazel bush in garden at corner of Orwell Park & Orwell Road just "opening".
