10th April 1945 (Tuesday).

After a dull morning a beautiful sunny afternoon but strong cool E. wind. In afternoon rode on bikes to Esker for eggs. On way there turned up Grand Canal at Clondalkin to Ballymakaily Mill & thence to Esker. Tried sweeping by drain parallel drain S. of canal 1/2 a mile up canal & just S. of gate to dairy farm, but east wind made collecting practically useless & after two sweeps gave up. For insects taken here see below:-

Willow Warblers everywhere along canal, with Chiffchaffs, & we met a Swallow coming down canal in full song - another (perhaps the same one) seen by Daisy later.

Cardamine pratensis in flower by canal & drain. Hawthorn nearly, but not quite out.

Insects swept by drain S. of dairy farm gate, Grand Canal, Clondalkin, Co. DU,

Ichneumonids 2♂︎♂︎ of a sp. of Phygadenonid, red abdomen, which is usually very common early in season: not kept.
Braconid = Ephedrus lacertosus ♂︎, ant. 11 {labelled 2.2.1948!}
