22nd April 1945.

A beautifully sunny day with Easterly breeze. Sun intensely hot.

In afternoon took bus to Bohernabreena (3 P.M.) & walked up to cliff facing N. just NE. of Ballinascorney Gap to get climbing exercise!! This cliff is at about 1000 ft. & has some quite nice wet, dripping, spots but mainly an ordinary lowland vegetation. Here, however, Geum rivale has one of its few & highest stations in Dublin and is accompanied by Crepis paludosa. Amidst this vegetation saw one small lanky plant of Cotoneaster about 6th in height: no doubt bird-sown from Glenasmole or some farm near same. Collected one moss in fruit for D. Meikle & a sprig of pure Goat Willow in fruit.

22-29th April 1945.

The first half of week continued dry with very hot sun, but on 26-27th temperature fell & some showers arrived from NW, with small depression. On afternoon of 28th (Sat.) a jam appeared to W. of Dublin & rain, hail & melted snow fell from 2.15 till 5.30 P.M., which snow on the

hills & all the mountains were deep in snow the following morning. On this day (I believe) the swan at Portobello Bridge (on Grand Canal) hatched her brood: the previous week she was almost roasted on 19-20th by the intense sun.

30th April-2nd May 1945.
Very cold with quite hard frost on night of 30th Ap. & 1st May & early potatoes mostly all killed. Cold rain on 2nd May but scarcely any warmer.

3rd-7th May 1945.

During this period the weather improved, gradually getting warmer, but with heavy rain on night of 4th May & showers on other days. Our Swifts arrived on evening of 5th & five heard screaming over back garden at 7.30 P.M. As garden wall being rebuilt & on duty in Museum on Sunday 6th, did no collecting, though I have every reason to believe many insects out during period 5th-7th when very hot sun & mainly soft, damp, atmosphere; wind SW. inland though S.E. E. along coast.
