8th to 12th May 1945. 

Very warm;  very hot sun most days with cool E. wind;  thunderstorms, &c.

On evening of 11th May at 7 P.M. saw a huge ♀︎ Bombus distinguendus on flower of Anchusa in back garden & about same time captured a ♀︎ Specodes affinis busily investigating burrows of Halictus leucopus in the mortar of E. back garden wall.

On morning of 12th May saw first Crabro - a ♂︎ C. leucostomus, in back garden at motor house door at 9 A.M.

10th May 1945. 
A ♂︎ Atractodes ? hatched out of a sea-birds nest to E. O'Mahony from Rockabill Island by one of the lightkeepers =

12th May 1945.
First flowers on Co. Down plant of Rosa "tomentosa" (or? mollis) in back garden, which usually does not flower before 1st week in June, but also flowered early last year.


13th-20th May 1945.
Gale on 13th (Sunday & Monday) 14th, with terriffic hail-shower on former & rain on morning of 14th.  East wind all week, but mainly fine & some sun.  Glass started to fall lower on 18th & much rain on night of 19-20th & on forenoon of latter.  Cleared about noon & at 2 p.m. saw just ☿ Bombus (lucorum) on flowers of Columbine in back garden.

20th May 1945, cont.

After a wet morning a nice afternoon with light SE. wind & jam along coast:  fine inland & blue sky to SW.  

In afternoon rode via The Greenhills, Whitehall House, to Jobstown & home via Marlfield, Old Basn & Fir house.   Heard one Corncrake W. of The Greenhills & saw a ☿ Bombus in lane above Jobstown:  this was very large & possibly  terrestris - if not, then lucorum;  also saw a ♀︎ B. muscorum in same lane.  Wild roses well out in several places & Daisy saw several flowers on brambles near Whitehall House.  Many plants showed signs of having young shoots & leaves killed by recent frosts, including ivy, sycamore, ash, hazel, elm, horse-chestnut, Clematis Vitalba;  even some thorn bushes & roses.
