29th June 1945.

Friday: decreed a Bank Holiday in Eire because The Hierarchy at Maynooth said it was to be "Thanksgiving Day", but for what exactly nobody seems to know - anyway it means more grist to the mill as all the good papists went to mass at least once. We rode to Glenasmole arriving about 11.45 at head of upper reservoir. Two minutes later a jam formed over the glen & a thick drizzle descended & kept at it for an hour. Had lunch about 1 P.M. & as the weather cleared did an hours sweeping before further showers stopped me. Then rode back to Bohernabreena & stopped in sunshine to investigate Typha & Equisetum limosum-filled swampy pool between road & R. Dodder 1/2 mile above (S. of) Old Bawn bridge, but almost immediately a thunder-storm formed to west & then passed eastwards N. of us, with rain which stopped collecting. After waiting an hour here we rode home dry & arrived at 4.45. Heavy showers at intervals later in evening.
