253.

27th Sept. 1945.

After bad & stormy weather & rain during night, spent forenoon in Glenasmole looking at roses in fruit with Desmond Meikle (up from Newtownards for a few days); everything dripping wet & so collecting of insects almost impossible but tried a little sweeping at head of upper reservoir, by Slade Brook channel & along walk to footbridge from bottom upper dam; but even on the alder trees at last place found Succinea putris on the crawl & net soon wet in other places.

Saw swallows & sand-martins flying over lower reservoir at 12.30 noon on way back to bus. Learnt that Mr. Moore, the caretaker for last 12 years, was about to retire.

Examined the following Rosae:- R. spinosissima & spinosissima x tomentosa (by river bank just above Mr. Doyle's), tomentosa; mollis (in field E. of upper reservoir just south of fir plantation); tomentosa x canina (by road round upper reservoir, east side, near St. Anne's church); & 3 main types of the canina group:- (1) that with globular fruit usually in bunches & bright orange red colour, (2) that with deep red more elongate fruit, usually single,
