The Misses Leaman (his landladies at 21 Lower Baggot St. where he had lived since he sold Ballyhyland about 1919); Dr. & Mrs. R. D. Prayes; A. Farrington, G.F. Mitchell, Athol Harrison, Mr/Mrs. Webb (?), Nevin, & 6 gentlemen I did not know; also several ladies - members of the Bird Prot. Society. C.B.M. who had reached the age of 86, died on 14th, merely of old age, & without suffering; he had been in bed only for a few days & had scarcely been out for about a year, except with hep. He will be missed by many, as we had become accustomed to appeal to him for information on many matters concerning natural history.

Later - at 11.30 - Daisy & I rode on bikes to Rathcoole & then to Redgap on road to Kilteel. Had lunch at 1 P.M. on roadside at Redgap in very hot sun & strong E. breeze. During lunch watched moves of male wasps - that caught being V. vulgaris - flying along ditches & hedges & especially [[?]] ash trees & took 1 ♀ Cryptinid with fingers on a ripe blackberry. After lunch tried sweeping in grazing field W. of road, with springs & rushy

patches, but windy & little in the way of hymenoptera.

Proceeded up bye road leading to Shin Thoule & stopped to collect in potato-turnip field (very weedy) at ca. 900 ft. & just below last farm on way over to Brittas. Here hymenoptera fairly numerous, especially along grassy margins of field, Arrived at head of small dry glen (alt. 950 ft.) at 3.15 & collected in glen & off oaks, &c. till 4 P.M. when had aft. tea. Here small Hymenoptera in great quantity! After tea continued over Shin Thoule ridge (where no wind at all) & down to the Brittas Pond & so home via Crooksling & Tallaght. Did not meet strong E. wind till nearly The Embankment, but then had it ± against us all the way home.

Bumble Bees (agrorum & lucorum) frequent on higher ground.
