20th Feb. 1946. Colder with strong NW wind though much hot sun. In afternoon walked to Orwell Bridge & down Dodder to Milltown & then back up to Rathfarnham Bridge & home from Terenure by bus. This once sylvan little river, beloved of fishermen, is now full of tin cans, old buckets, builders' & house refuse, mainly thrown into it by the householders now living along its south bank. Yet the Kingfisher still haunts the reach below Rathfarnham Bridge & we saw it today. Alder & elm in flower at same place & some willows very nearly out.

♀ Salix cinerea in back garden coming on rapidly & some catkins quite elongate & green.

24th Feb. 1946. Miss Odlum's Blue Scilla in front garden out, as well as one plant of Cowslip in front border. Saxifraga apiculata in front-garden (both clumps) almost out & flower open on both next day (25th).
