3rd May 1946.

The second beautifully sunny day, but with cool & strong E—NE wind. After trouble with car left Rathgar at 12:15 noon & drove (with Desmond Meikle on board) to top of Clara Wood, Co. WI., to show him the kind of ground Cephalanthera ensifolia grows in, but found the Orchid only just pushing up & everything very late. Also found that a new zigzag road had been made down to river through Cronyburn Wood & the greater part of it cut & replanted with conifers by the forestry department. "The Osmunda Glade", however, not touched & may escape owing to swampy ground. Arrived at top of wood at 1.30 & had lunch. Left Clara about 3.30 & drove via Glenealy to Wicklow station, where left car & walked over bridge to the Murrough to see the clovers, but we were again too early & only Trifolium subterraneum & Trigonella just in flower & the others not recognizable. Left Wicklow at 5-30 & home 6.35 - car now being 20 years old.

Had time for one sweep only in Clara Wood where took Ischnocerus filicornis - ant. 33 ♂︎, Stenomacrus ventralis ♀︎, Orthocentrus sp. - ant. 26 ♂︎, Eclytus fontinalis? ♂︎, ant. 26, & 1♂︎ Campoplegid not mtd. Lots of insects flying if had had time!

On The Murrough at Wicklow found nest of Lasius flavus on bank with clovers.
