25th (Thursday) July 1946

A fine day, warm, mainly dull, wind strong SE on coast, SW inland.

Drove J.P. Brunker to Magherabeg, Co. Wicklow to look for the hybrid sedge Carex vesicaria x hirta taken here by him last year unknowingly: as he did not recognise it at the time he was not sure exactly where he collected it, but he knew it was somewhere around the lagoon between the sandhills & old coast-line. Did not see the hybrid but vesicaria all over & around the lagoon & several patches of large hirta at N. end of lagoon, where I feel sure B. gathered the hybrid, as no hirta seen by the lagoon elsewhere. Hybrid refound at SE corner in 1948! AWS. Other sedges seen were arenaria & goodenowii (? var. juncella) only.

Swept insects for an hour before lunch & two hours after lunch as follows:-

1. Vegetation / mainly sedge & Mentha aquatica at S.E. corner of lagoon. 12 noon - 1 P.M.

2. Reed, sedges, &c. at N. end of lagoon 2.30-4 PM.

3. Dunes, marran grass, &c. between 2 & sea. 4:15-4.40 P.M.

Left for home at 5 P.M. & home at 6.25 P.M.
