8.6.46, contd. Coumaknock, Brandon Mt., SK., cont.

[[strikethrough]] saw [[/strikethrough]] more Pinguicula vulgaris than on any day previously during the trip & also, of course, much P. grandiflora though this now past its best.

In a small pool in western hanging valley (W. of Bealard) much Potamogeton polygonifolium [[strikethrough]] (?) [[/strikethrough]] √, all in flower. Searched much likely ground for Rev. A. Ley's station for Thalictrum alpinum but without success. Carabus granulatus (bronze form), Notiophilus & small Staph. = taken at ca. 2,000 ft.

In evening went with Major R.F. Ruttledge (who had arrived on 7th) to show him where Grasshopper Warbler was believed nearby on moor NW. of Cloghane.

9th June 1946.

After a wet night, very thick rain fell all forenoon; fine in afternoon, but again rain from 7.30 PM. onwards.

In afternoon walked nearly to Connor Pass & back but beyond Sibthorpia along roadside saw nothing of interest. Did not collect anything.

10th June 1946.

A fine clear day with some showers & very strong NW wind & rising glass. Got lift in car to end of road on cliffs N. of Brandon village & walked +/- along cliffs to Sauce Creek & back via the new turf road to Teer, where picked up & brought back to Cloghane by car. Left hotel at 11 AM. & back at 6.20 P.M. Ruttledge went with us in morning & as we got out of car we were met by a Peregrine Falcon & five Ravens, while down over the sea were many Fulmars & Gannets. Ruttledge later in day saw about 20 Fulmars on cliffs just inside Brandon Bay but none had eggs or appeared to be going to nest. Cliffs around Sauce Creek very dangerous & full of crevasses where chunks of cliff are slipping into sea.

No trace of "Alpines" on these cliffs, beyond Sax. umbrosa & Solidago & the only plants seen of interest were Listera cordata amongst heather & Menyanthes trifoliata in small tarns just above Sauce Creek, at ca. 1100 ft.

In a swampy place just S. of Teer Bridge
