8th Sept 1946.

A poor day with heavy showers, often one of the wettest week I remember. No rain in forenoon but everything wet after rain in night, so set out for Louisa Bridge on Royal Canal, Co. KD., at 2 P.M. Quite hot & damp, but chilly wind had sprung up from north & this brought jam to N.W. & rain before we got to Clondalkin. However we ran through this & it was not raining when we reached the canal, though everything dripping. Went straight to Mr. Mitchell's plantation (from loch above Louisa bridge where left car!) & tried sweeping driest spots, but heavy shower once more not everything.

Nevertheless in an hour I had filled a sucker in plantation. Then a still heavier shower passed over from West & we had a cup of tea at 4 P.M. & after this I tried sweeping edge of tow path, but another shower finished this. Next collected some crab apples & them walked E. down in canal to 3rd field W. of Louisa Bridge - this year mainly in oats & already cut, but extreme W. end in turnip, carrots & a plethora of weed as in summer of 194 , so tried sweeping weeds &c., but except along hedge impossibly wet & soon had to give in as net full of water.
