2nd April 1947, cont.

the summits of Glendhu Mt., Seahaun & Kippure. Heard no migrants, though hot sun at 5 P.M. should have induced any Chiffchaff to sing at Bohernabreena if one had been there; & no sign of Sand Martins over the Dodder at same place. Hazel catkins nearly over for most part, but no willow nearly out by road above Mrs. Doyles, though no doubt a soft warm spell would bring some of them out in a week's time if that should come.

4th April 1947.

A fine cold day with NW breeze & much hot sun in afternoon. Good Friday.

In afternoon took bus to Rathfarnham (at about 2.15) & walked to the summit of the Glendhu pass (The Pine Forest!) & back to Rock Brook to catch 5.5 bus & so home. Large drifts of snow still on hills & by roadside almost down to Rockbrook. Glendhu not much changed since I was last up there - about ten years ago! - & should repay working later in year, in spite of the Forestry plantations of conifers on southern slopes above it.

5th April 1947.

A day of gale & rain from S.W. clearing about 4 P.M., with terrific shower at intervals later. Small Almond Tree at corner of Kenilworth Park & Wilfred Rd. may be considered out - about six weeks later than in previous year. No other almonds seen out so far! Salix cinerea ♀︎ in back garden also out & great show of flowers on all plants of Sax. oppositifolia in George's garden & shoots appearing from three dormant plants of Polygonum viviparum in pot in motor house [from Brandon Mt., S. Kerry, June 1946!].

6th April 1947.

A wild day, bu mainly sunny & only with slight skiffs of rain in late afternoon. Wind W. & of gale force! In afternoon walked from 54 bus to Greenhills & then by Tymon Castle to Firhouse & then home, via Terenure.

Saw Viola odorata out in lane N. of Tymon Castle & in hedge by stream watched a Chiffchaff for some time, but it would not call, in exactly the same spot as one believed seen on 25th Feb. 1945, but this latter record was too uncertain to record in my diary as I only got a brief & unexpected look at the bird.

7th April.

Swan ♀︎ at Portobello probably commenced sitting!
