10th Aug. 1947. 

A very fine day with gentle W. breeze & very hot sun all day where we were at Athdown.

Rode on bikes, leaving home at 10 AM. & arriving at the "footstick" path, Athdown, Upper Liffey, Co. WI., at 12-20, alt. 800-900 ft.  Collected in 3 areas as follows:-

27. 1 = edge of potato & corn patch in field below the road & at top of scarp (with oak-hazel &c.) & rt. (N.) bank of R. Liffey, just E. of the dam 12.30-1 P.M.
18. 2 = Left bank of R. Liffey for 1/4 mile above the footstick, including the marsh below the scarp & above gorge, 2-4 P.M.
51. 3 = same as 1 but 4-5 P.M.

Formica fusca winged ♀︎, swept amongst grass.
Myrmica sp.  ♂︎, swept, not examined.
Lissonota bellator  ♀︎: not mtd.

Alysia atra  6♂︎♂︎, 1♀︎, along potato-drill amongst Potato, Galeopsis tetrahit, Spergularia, Polygonum Persicaria &c.  Ant. of 6♂︎♂︎, 30(1), 31(1) & 34(4);  of ♀︎, 29.  In some of these the notauli are quite strongly developed, in others scarcely traceable, & in at least 1♂︎ they die out on disc:  therefore in Marshall's key some would run to atra & some to mandibulator!  AWS. 1951.
Pentapleura pumilio  1♂︎.
Aspilota dentifemur parva  1♀︎, ant. 17.
A. cf. vulgaris  1♂︎, ant. 22.
A. concinna Hal.  1 fine ♀︎, ant. 19.
A. dilatata Thoms.  1 typical ♀︎, ant. 16;  another smaller, with narrow wings, ant. 16 also but very pale at base & much paler legs, but head typical & must below here!  AWS. 1951.  - cf. ♂︎ taken at 3, p.262!
Dacnusa areolaris group  3, not mtd.
D. affinis  4: not mtd.
Chaenusa conjungens  8 (♂︎♂︎ & ♀︎♀︎) - a very dry place to get this species!  1♂︎, 1♀︎ mtd.;  ant. 23 & 19 respectively.

Stung caterpillar on grass found from which a ♀︎ Rogas nigricornis emerged next day or so;  ant. 45.
