4.10.47.

At 5.15 p.m. on arrival home at 14 Clareville Rd. caught a flying insect, in the kitchen with my hand. Thinking it was a Drosophila I, as I thought "squashed" it hard, but seeing it was not dead, I gave it a good squeeze between finger & thumb.  Finally, seeing it was still very much alive I examined it & found it was a ♀︎ Aspilota vesparum Stelfox.  The antennae were mutilated.

Plenty of Small White Butterflies seen & a few Small Tortoiseshells in garden.  No Bumble Bees seen!


5th Oct. 1947.

The sixth perfect day in succession, after a heavy dew & misty morning;  all sunny & no wind;  sun incredibly warm for October.  In afternoon rode with Marcus Graham to Grand Canal, W. of Killeen, Co. DU., as on 1.10.47 & collected in three areas, as follows:-

1 = Stubble field of oats & weeds, especially uncut bits & edge next canal.  Part of station 1 of 1.10.47, see p.300.
2 = W. edge (& ditch) of same field.  Part of station 1 of 1.10.47.
3 = Ditch along S.E. side of field W. of 1 = same as station 3 of 1.10.47;  see map on p.300.
