16th June 1948.

After several fine days & a beautiful forenoon, rain started at 3.30 just as we reached Lucan demesne & continued till late evening; this together with a drop in temperature made collecting hopeless. Nevertheless I & Marcus Graham collected what we could be sweeping (at first) beneath some of the larger trees & (later) with suckers from the underside of leaves of lime (chiefly), beech, &c. Many specimens of the Stratiomyid fly Beris chalybeata seen glued to underside of leaves by the fungus.

20th June 1948.

A fine day, with gentle NW. breeze, but entirely dull & heavy rain following at night; many insects out & about.

Drove (alone) with Marcus Graham to Kippure House gate, Upper Liffey Valley, Co. WI., & collected between road and R. Liffey just W. of tributary stream from 11.30 AM. till 4 P.M.; then came back to Athdown & collected for an hour (after tea!) on slope from the dun to footstick & noted a third patch of Rubus nessensis on left side of path down field from road to footstick.

Swept in two areas at Kippure Ho. & one at Athdown, as follows:-
