22nd July 1948.

A very nice day after one of strong gale & some rain; with stormy SW. wind & where we were one heavy shower from 1 till 1.30 P.M.; much hot sun. Drove Brunker to Brittas Bay, Co. WI., to investigate an orchid in a hollow in the sand dunes there reported (when in bud) by the Dutch botanist Sipkes to be possibly Epipactis microphylla, but as we expected it proved to be merely E. palustris growing up through the mat of Salix repens. Swept the said hollow & took many small Hymenoptera there & then drove on to Buckroney where had lunch & parked car. After lunch & shower collected insects in dunes & by lagoon between road & sea till 3 P.M. & then spent an hour on edge of reed-bed in Buckroney marsh, just north of the outlet drain. Swept in four areas, as follows:-

1 = Hollow in dunes, Brittas Bay, amongst Salix repens &c. 12.30-12.50 noon.
2 = Dry dunes, with Salix repens, Alder, Birch & Salix cinerea east of road & south of outlet from Buckroney Marsh. 1.30 - 2:30
3 = South end of lagoon & dunes near same & then back to road over same ground as 2. 2.30-3.0 PM
4 = S.E. edge of Buckroney reed-bed & marsh W. of road & N. of outlet.  3.0-4-0 P.M.

Left for home at 5.20 & home at 6.50, George driving.
