27th Sept. 1948.

Very mild, dull, humid morning; clouds moving from SW-W, but gentle E. breeze in Clareville Rd. from 8 to 10 AM. Very large flock of Hirundines over Clareville Rd. at 9.30 AM., playing but apparently also moving southward; flying low over house-tops & so far as I cold see all were House Martins.

R.C. Faris in town for week-end from Cavan & at 11 AM. drove in his car to Athdown, Upper Liffey, WI., in spite of rising S.W. wind & signs of coming rain: ran into drizzle almost at once which increased as we approached Crooksling & then lightened again, but thick misty rain at Athdown. Stopped above the footstick & walked across river & showed Faris Rubus nessensis (which had quite a lot of fruit on it this year & tasted of various things but not blackberry!), Vaccinium Oxycoccus & Orobanche major. Later drove on to Kippure Ho. & had lunch in car, after 1/2 hours walk up military road (& back) towards Kilbride camp. After lunch as only light rain blowing in the wind spent 1 1/2 hours sweeping birch, Salix, &c. below the road & between road & military road; Stenomacrus ventralis in great abundance & hymenoptera particularly abundant on small oak between the two roads. Home about 4.30 P.M.
