October 1948 - November 14th.

On 2.11.48, which was a a gloriously mild sunny day I took a ♀︎ [female] of Hemiteles of similis Gmel. in the "18" bus from Balls Bridge [Ballsbridge] to Kenilworth Park, Dublin at 1 P.M. On same window (front of upper deck) there was also a small Hymenoptera which looked like a Dacnusa (or Procto.?) A.W.S.

As car failed an on return journey at Kilpeddar on 30th Sept. due to perishing of rubber coupling to dynamo on the half-time shaft, we had to leave it to be doctored by McCormick of Newtownmountkennedy & come home in bus. The car eventually towed back to Dublin by FitzGerald about 3 weeks later!

A few days, later I had to get an old lower molar tooth extracted, which resulted after it & my dentist (Mr. Dugdale) had struggled together for 1 3/4 hours in severe pain for 3 weeks & partial pain till end of 1st week in November. Consequentaly I had no outings during that period & did no collecting.

Weather during Oct. & till Nov. 14th very variable & alternating every few days between very cold & with

slight frost at nights to hot, damp, & sticky.

After a number of oscillations of this type the week of Nov. 8th to 14th settled down warm & damp & very like the weather we often have had at Xmas in years past. October was very wet in many parts of the country, but in Dublin no great weight of rain fell & there were some very nice fine and sunny days, but for the most part it was dull & damp.

13th Nov. 1948.

A very mild damp day, but fine in afternoon, so took a walk (Marcus Graham being with us) via Orwell Bridge to Hazlebrook Farm & back by the Narrow Walls to Rathfarnham. Ivy bloom very fine & many many wasps (V. vulgaris ☿☿ & possibly a few ♂︎♂︎, but latter doubtful!) seen; also Honey Bee with heavy loads of pollen at ivy just E. of the Narrow Walls - no doubt from a hive near by.

17th Nov. 1948.

Took day off & went by 10.5 bus to Whitechurch & walked up lane round W. side of Kilmashoge to over 1,000 ft. & back again to Rathfarnham bus & so home at 2 P.M. A most glorious fresh day, no wind & very hot sun - so hot that we could comfortably sit down & bask right where we liked. The reason we had to walk back to Rathfarnham
