31st January 1949. A fine day; sunny in forenoon; mainly cloudy in afternoon. Did not go out as waiting for tarp to come & did not arrive till 4.30 P.M. Misty rain came on about 5.30 P.M. & thick drizzle lasted till midnight, on arrival of cold anticyclone from the north.

1st Feb. '49. A perfect day! entirely sunny, but very keen though light E. breeze. In afternoon rode to lower dam in Glenasmole & sat in sun till this dipped behind Secaim at about 4 P.M. On the face of the dam, facing S., saw two flowers as last years Knapweed & on the reverse side - grass slope facing N. - saw two buttercups, one an old stem of R. acris with two flowers & the other a fresh flower of R. bulbosus which appeared to be due to precocious growth. By the spillway from lower reservoir saw an Alder with catkins fully open.

2nd Feb. 49. A dull cold day, followed by slight white frost In afternoon walked from Rathfarnham bus to Kilmashogue Bridge & back to catch 4 P.M. bus at Marley (Whitechurch). First Yellow Crocus out in back garden, 14 Clareville Rd & many now out in front garden. Daisy reported that the little Almond tree in Kenilworth Park (ref. to in diary of recent years!) in flower & probably out for 1 or 2 days. Some ivy still in bloom in hedge near Whitechurch although Blackbirds & Starlings now eating the more advanced berries on other plants near by.

3rd February 1949. A beautiful day, all sunny in forenoon, but considerable light cloud in afternoon, when took bikes & road via Green Hills to the Naas road & then W. till we picked up that from Clondalkin to Tallaght; turned off latter at Belgard Castle corner & rode round old airfield to Fortunestown & so home via Tallaght & Templeogue. Wind very light & S-SW.

4th Feb. 49. After a hard white frost, a beautifully sunny morning & forenoon. At 1.30 AM. saw a nice display of Aurora Borealis from landing window - a few hours after a talk on this had been given in B.B.C. programme of "Science Progress" - which I regret I did not listen to!! In afternoon rode to Clondalkin & up Grand Canal to Ballynakilly Bridge & back to Clondalkin by road & so home - about 19 miles. Beautifully warm in sun along canal & not a breath of wind, but very cold E. wind in Dublin which on return journey we began to feel as we topped the hill above Clondalkin & descended to Red Cow. Daphne laureola in flower (seedling of old plant killed in frost of 1946-47) at front door, 14 Claresville Rd., & probably out for a few days. Some Sax. oppositifolia in front garden with purple buds showing & S. appiculata very nearly out. Chionodoxa shoots up.
