16th Feb. 1949. Received by first post, just two months after I had retired from Museum, a statement from Dept. of Education that the Minister for Finance - nowadays pronounced "Finnánce" - had "been pleased" to grant me a pension of £295.3.7 & a "lump sum" of £787.3.0, which letter I acknowledged. Very mild and sunny in forenoon, but with SW gale, though glass quite level for last 48 hours. First purple Crocus out in front garden by path to gate & also several in Macauley's garden, 10 Clareville Rd. Several flowers also open on Sax. oppositifolia from Benevenagh [[Binevenagh]] in front garden & on similar small flowered form from Snowdon (C. D's plant) in W. border of back garden. The Daphne blaggiana [[blagayana]] in back garden which showed white buds in November last has now been ± open for a week or ten days, but it is not easy to say when it is in flower. One plant of Chionodoxa in front garden with flower spike ready to open. N.B. There were definitely no flowers & not even purple buds on either plants of Sax. opp. (referred to above) on 15th!!! In afternoon took bus to Firhouse & walked back to Rathfarnham. Saw one flower on Viola Reichenbachiana - ditch at Prospect & one plant of Anthriscus sylvestris actually in flower near Cosgrave's. [Temperature in shade in Devon reported by B.B.C. to have reached 70[[degrees]] F. in one place!]
