19th July 1949 (Tuesday).

After a cold & wet spell following prolonged drought & very hot weather. A fine day, W. wind., showers to N.

Drove to Glenasmole & left car at middle lodge, 11 A.M., walked up to head of upper reservoir, then W. up the Corrig Brook below the waterfall where the Beech Fern grows; on the way passed some nice wet places with much Pinguicula lusitanica & on approaching rt. bank of the Corrig Brook saw several nice patches of Galium uliginosum. Had lunch 1 P.M. just above & S. of fall & later worked up stream & gathered a bag of mosses & hepatics for Miss Thomson. Saw Galium uliginosum on rt. bank for at least 50 feet above the fall, which according to Colgan's height for the Beech Fern of 1,100 ft., makes its altitude up to 1150 ft. Also saw Equisetum arvense at this height & E. sylvaticum a little lower down. Much Salix aurita & some Betula just above fall, say 1125 ft., & swept this for ten minutes. Hymenoptera very common & all those listed below swept at this place, just above the fall. Then on up stream & on nearing the patch of red boulder-clay turned S. & up to summit of Corrig, seeing much Empetrum on the way, but all the ground has been burnt during recent years, though not this year. Next crossed col between Corrig & Seecawn & ascended latter on summit of which saw fresh motor bike tracks. Arrived at the W. cairn
