at end of a sunny spell & found ourselves surrounded by wasps, but sun going in & cold wind blowing before a shower all had disappeared but one by the time I got out my net. The one captured was a ♂︎ V. sylvestris & feel sure all the others were this species also, mostly ♂︎♂︎, but I certainly saw one ♀︎. [[margin]] See also p.319 to follow! [[/margin]]

Although Sirex gigax & other insects are well known to use mountain tops as a place of assembly I don't remember hearing of any species of wasp doing so, though I have before now found the remains of a queer wasp (V. under stones of this very cairn on summit of Seecawn, 2,131 ft. alt.

Had tea by the cairn & enjoyed wonderful view from the Comeragh in Waterford, Slievenanon near Clonmel, the Silvermine Mts. beyond & S. of Slieve Bloom, various "hillocks" over the central plain N. to those near Knockdrin, Co. Westmeath; N. of this obscured by showers, but Slieve Gullion & the Mourner & Carlingford clear at times; in the foreground the whole of Dublin & Wicklow Mts. & to the east across the channel Snowdon & various hills on the Carnarvon coast. Came back to Glenasmole to car by the old track to Ballymorefin, by which the motor cyclist evidently had reached the summit. A few Bumble Bees seen only at close quarters & most were B. lucorum; one however a fresh ☿ of B. jonellus & seen above the fall.
