288. 19.7.49, cont. Corrig Brook, Corrig & Seacawn, Co. DU. at end of a sunny spell & found ourselves surrounded by wasps, but sun going in & cold wind blowing before a shower all had disappeared but one by the time I got out my net. The one captured was a ♂︎ V. sylvestris & feel sure all the others were this species also, mostly ♂︎♂︎, but I certainly saw one ♀︎. [[margin]] See also p.319 to follow! [[/margin]] Although Sirex gigax & other insects are well known to use mountain tops as a place of assembly I don't remember hearing of any species of wasp doing so, though I have before now found the remains of a queer wasp (V. under stones of this very cairn on summit of Seecawn, 2,131 ft. alt. Had tea by the cairn & enjoyed wonderful view from the Comeragh in Waterford, Slievenanon near Clonmel, the Silvermine Mts. beyond & S. of Slieve Bloom, various "hillocks" over the central plain N. to those near Knockdrin, Co. Westmeath; N. of this obscured by showers, but Slieve Gullion & the Mourner & Carlingford clear at times; in the foreground the whole of Dublin & Wicklow Mts. & to the east across the channel Snowdon & various hills on the Carnarvon coast. Came back to Glenasmole to car by the old track to Ballymorefin, by which the motor cyclist evidently had reached the summit. A few Bumble Bees seen only at close quarters & most were B. lucorum; one however a fresh ☿ of B. jonellus & seen above the fall. 289. 19.7.49, cont. Corrig Brook, Co. DU., alt. ca. 1125 ft. Insects swept off Salix aurita (mainly!) & a a few off Birch, rushes &c., about 30 yards above fall where the Beech Fern grows by the Corrig Brook. 12 noon - just after slight storm. In shelter. Dryinid ♀︎ = Sawflies. Dolerus aenus ♂︎ swept - others seen at moor. Tenthredo balteatus ♂︎♂︎ & ♀︎♀︎ Amblyteles cf. longigena ♂︎ ant. 43: first large black & yellow ♂︎ of season. Ichneumon cf. subquadratus ♂︎, ant. 27. Platylabus vibratorius Thunb. ♀︎, ant. 36. Phaeogenid ♂︎, ant. 27 = Gen. et sp.? Cryptinids. 1♂︎, 2♀︎♀︎ = Stilpnus gagates?, ant. 16: ♀︎. Hemiteles sp. ♂︎, ant. 22. H. sp. ♀︎, ant. 23. Lisonota bellator 1♀︎, ant. 43, 2 highly coloured ♂︎♂︎: 1 mtd. ant. 43. L. errabunda √ 2♀︎♀︎. Perilissus filicornis 1 small ♂︎, ant. 43.
