4th Sept. 1949.

After a fine day & night a jam formed & rain commenced at 9 AM., but at 9.30 all this cleared away & gave promise of a lovely day, though air very damp & warm & no decided wind. Set out in car about 10 AM. & drove via Ashford to Aghowle (just S. of Devil's Glen & N. of Carrick Mt.) to find that the little oak wood in which I took my type ♀︎ of Alysia lucilla had been completely swept away during war & the whole place bracken seven ft. high, with brambles, Salix & Birch & all dripping wet. Therefore drove on via Garryduff to wood N. of railway at Drumdangan & W. of Glenealy; here also found the Dept. of Forestry vandals in full blast slashing down all the native trees grown up since the oak wood was cut during the war in order to plant their blasted Conifers; nearly everything laid waste & what was left very wet - much too wet to sweep! Just as we pulled up the car a heavy shower came on & drenched everything once more & lasted an hour, then looked like clearing & just as things began to dry another jam formed & thick drenching rain came on once more & so drove home to find every place N. of the Scalp dry, though some misty rain later in Dublin.

Transcription Notes:
The sentence from '__ to "swept away during war" is likely incorrect, but was very difficult to read. Please look over it. 2. I think it's correct - I think he is referring tongue in cheek to the Forestry Dept. clearing "war" @kdownunder
