16th-17th Oct 1949. 
Much rain, but mild with sun on forenoon of 16th, then rain; fine and colder on 17th.  Many of wasps seen on 17th. though glass falling & gale approaching.


18th Oct '49 
After severe gale, with heavy rain during night, mainly fine during day, but colder.  Drizzle in evening, but after this started saw a wasp (?♂︎) fly across garden at 6.15 P.M. (S.T.)


19th Oct 49 
A fine cold day, but nearly all sunny, with strong W. wind dying out in evening when heavy shower at 6:15 p.m. Wasps much in evidence & ♀︎ V. vulgaris beaten down on to ground in front garden while lawn cutting grass about noon.  Later, in afternoon, while feeding snails in motor-house several ♀︎♀︎ seen searching for winter quarters but not examined so species unknown.  ♂︎ Bombus aporum seen in front garden in forenoon!


20th - 27th Oct 1949  
Rain on 22nd and forenoon of 23rd.  24th gloriously fine with very little rain all day, when painter started to paint outside of house windows!  After sunset on 24th, glass suddenly started to fall & a violent gale with rain commenced in early hours of morning of 25th & continued all that

20th 27th oct. 1949, cont.

day, with two breaks & short sunny intervals, while wind dropped dead in afternoon, before heavy rain again came on as wind went from SE to SW.  Very mild - almost warm during day but during night of 25th 26th wind went north & 26th was bitterly cold but nearly all sunny.  Over 2.5 inches of rain are said to have fallen during the 24 hours of 25th in Dublin!  First frost of season occurred on night of 26th-27th & roofs & grass lawns all white on morning of 27th, which was a most gloriously fine sunny day, just like 24th, though wind colder (NW) & merely a breeze.

Throughout the period - even during the fine spells on 25th - numerous wasps, especially ♂︎♂︎, seen coursing around hedge in front of house.  Both ♂︎♂︎ & ☿☿ quite numerous on 27th after the frosty night.


30th Oct 1949. 
One flower head on Petasites fragrans at Templeogue Bridge, but flowers not quite open. 

 
3rd Nov. 1949 
The above flower on P. fragrans showing anthers & another spike just ready to open flower.


4th to 13th Nov. 1949. 
Very mixed weather with one severe gale.  Wasps ♂︎ & ☿ continued to frequent garden & hedge & ivy, the ♂︎♂︎ in diminishing number & no ♂︎♂︎ seen on 13th Nov. but ☿☿ at ivy frequent.
